Steps to Transfer your Domain Name

Planning to transfer your domain name to HostingXtreme?

Before you do that, you need to have a few things in hand.

This article will explain what you need to know before you request a Domain Name Transfer to HostingXtreme.

Find out which email address is the Registered email address for your domain name.

You can do this by doing a WHOIS search on the domain name. This should be able to tell you exactly who the domain name is Registered to.

Go to https://whois.icann.org/ and type in the Domain Name you wish to do a search for.

WHOIS Search ICANN WHOIS

In the Registrant Field, you should see an active email address which you own or have control of. All transfer approval requests will be sent to that email address.

If the Registrant Email Address in the WHOIS is not yours or not accurate you can:

  • Go into your Domain Control Panel (which your old provider gave you) and change the email address to an active one
  • Contact the person who registered the domain name for you and ask them to give you the Domain Control Panel
  • Contact the Registrar mentioned in the WHOIS record, to give you control of the domain name

Your domain name needs to be unlocked at the current Registrar before it can be transferred out.

To check if your domain name is locked, you should do a WHOIS search as explained earlier.

In the Domain Status box, you will see the output of the Lock Status.

ICANN WHOIS

If the Domain Name is UNLOCKED and ready for transfer it should say something like: OK

If the Domain Name is LOCKED or Transfer has been prevented, it will say something like: clientTransferProhibited

To unlock your domain name:

  • Go into your Domain Control Panel (which your old provider gave you) and change the Domain Lock status
Contact the person who registered the domain name for you and ask them to give you the Domain Control Panel or to unlock it
  • Contact the Registrar mentioned in the WHOIS record, to give you control of the domain name

To transfer the Domain Name, you will need the Auth Code or EPP Code or Secret Code to transfer the domain.

You can get this code by checking your Domain Control Panel or Contacting your Current Domain Provider.

The EPP Code will be a long character string, which will be generated and usually sent by email to the Registrant Email Address.

A usual EPP Code looks like: 00sdf(&^8078yn087ydsaf(HN*^%&^/
