Error Message

Sending reported error (0x800CCC05): The server responded: 501 too many syntax or protocol errors

What does it mean?

If you see this message in your mail client (like Outlook or Thunderbird) it means that the message you were trying to send has some issue in it.

Common Causes for the error include:

  • A misspelled email address in the To: field (most common)
  • Improper Characters in the To: field Eg: < > [ ] etc.
  • Leaving a space before or after the email address
  • Manually typing the wrong SMTP commands into a terminal window
  • A mail filtering or mail scanning plugin which is integrated into your mail client Eg: An Anti-Virus or Firewall
  • An old / incorrect message lying in your Outlook Outbox folder.

What should I do so that I can resume normal mailing?

Go to the mail which you were trying to send and check the spellings in the To: field. If all spellings are proper, try to disable the Anti-Virus or Mail Scanner and retry. You can also remove any old mail from the the Outbox folder and retest with a fresh mail.
